There are battles being waged in realms most cannot or will not "see". There are physical fights over land, over power, over subjugation. There are struggles against disease-invisible battles against invisible "enemies" to humanity and human well being. There are political battles of will, of control and of deception with all the instruments of political "war" each party can muster.
However, the battle few mention openly is the most serious confrontation-that of the attack of "evil" or darkness against righteousness and "light". There are different interpretations of what these attacks consist of and how to combat them as an individual and as part of a collective defense. The stakes are life and death on both a physical and spiritual plane, they co-exist no matter how often the narratives/propaganda/indoctrination/media scripts strive to deny this truth.
In anticipation of an attack, it is vital you are as prepared as possible-given there will be unknowns. We are guided in the spiritual realm by instruction, as we may be in the physical/military realm by manuals. There are specific prescriptions for training strength in spiritual readiness, for arming oneself and for spotting "enemies". There are ways to vanquish adversaries, to illuminate and to prepare for peace as well as war. A number of spiritual warrior traditions contain all these elements. This week I will discuss one path-the path of the spiritual warrior and the specific "armor of God" detailed in the book of Ephesians, written by the apostle Paul while he was being held prisoner in ancient Rome, in approximately 62 AD.
There are many similarities in human actions (some might say in human nature) from the Roman empire it's rise, fall and decline-to what is happening in the USA now-if one will look with clear eyes and listen with discerning ears. This time the barbarians are not outside the gates of the capital they are already intermingled with the citizens, the governing councils, the military, courts and society. They have used all the tactics and tools known to humans from ancient times to the present and added the advances of technology, psychology, media messaging and the weaponization of every facet of human existence-especially strong emotions-love, hate, passion and fear.
Yet God (by whatever name in whatever language you know) has provided counter tactics, guidance and "armor" to shield us against the onslaught in progress and those battles we will face in the future. In the Bible, the power of prayer is stressed as a potent "power" and call to be used by the Judeo-Christian faiths. In Buddhism chants and meditations as well as actions and the discipline for non-action, are part of the "armor" of their tradition. In certain Native American traditions rituals religiously followed are an important part of defense and armoring against the "spirits of darkness, doubt, discord and division."
Sacrifice is an integral part of preparation for any battle. Being willing to "give up" comfort, "worldly pleasures", time, other priorities (i.e. relationships, career goals, financial gain, etc.) is part of the process of focus and commitment to the "war effort" in the spiritual realms as well as the martial realm. Being willing to "train" and endure pain, hardship and confusion is a pre-requisite for any serious warrior. Being willing to run toward the "fight" and "never give up" are attitudes and capabilities which must be continually honed to be an effective spiritual warrior while continually checking if the means they use are justified and the cause they are fighting for...is a righteous cause.
There are calls often referred to as "clarion calls" to fight. Be mindful, these "calls" may not be heard due to all the "noise" and distractions of the 21st century. Try to be still enough and quiet enough to hear them. There is no age or gender limit for warriors on the spiritual field of battle. Be awake and alert. The forces creeping in will do everything in their power to dull your consciousness.
Do not be lulled into a sleep induced by soul weariness or soul anesthetizing substances. Consciousness is a powerful "weapon" and "armor", as is stark truth. Facing/revealing truths is the first step in putting on your armor. Not everyone will be pleased with your "strengths" nor may they want you to shine and refine your "light". Remember though, you are never alone if you have faith in the Divine and follow the "battle plan" set for you...as quixotic as it may first appear to you and to others. A warrior must have dedication and resolve.
As with any skill, we humans must practice rigorously and consistently to perfect our spiritual readiness. Putting on the armor of God is a conscious daily practice. We polish this "armor" by learning more prayers and scripture, by refraining from lies, by working at peaceful outcomes and by trusting in the guidance we receive from God, no matter how difficult or controversial it may seem to follow while we live on the Earth.
Signing off tonight from the capital of Texas, Austin - a shell of a city compared to what it was during it's heyday. The music I choose is from the soundtrack of the brilliant animated film "The Secret of Kells". The lyrics are in English and Gaelic (Irish). This film touches on the existence of other worlds. A recurring message in the song is that "we are only here for a short time". www.youtube.com/watch?v=32DM5tNeHBA
Our family moved to Austin from rural Australia in late 1998. We brought in the year 2000 here - with celebratory fireworks. I remember my daughter squealing with delight at the lights in the sky and the fact she was able to stay up past midnight. We were here a short time. I took a better position in Denver, Colorado and we moved there in the summer of 2000.
This film and song were well liked by my son, Denali who was a valiant spiritual warrior of light, who "visited" this Earth for a mere 25 years; but continues his presence from beyond the threshold. He is never out of the fight.
Until next week-recommending you use the time you have for awhile-to prepare.
